Driving out to Denver ‘cross the wide Nebraska plains.
The sun a dying ember as it glows through distant rains.
As I watch the sun fade down below the Great Divide
A voice within me saying “You can run, but you can’t hide.

Wondering at the mystery how the boy becomes a man.
Sometimes I think the best of me has slipped right through my hands.
But somehow all these roads led me to places I have seen
The kindness of a friendly face most everywhere I’ve been.

They have carried me up mountains
Watched me soar across the sky
They were sent by the Father
For these lonely midnight rides
Hidden within strangers throughout time
He loves you
That’s why God put angels by your side.

He was standing on the corner, off the exit to my right.
His sign read “California” as I stopped for him that night.
His name was unfamiliar as he climbed into my car,
Said he’s going to San Francisco, I said I’m not going that far.

There was something in the words he spoke, the way he held my eye.
Something in my heart awoke, a memory passing by.
I never have been able to forget what happened next;
I swear I saw a halo ‘round his face as he confessed.

Then he laid his hand upon me and just listened all the while 
And the night rolled on before us like so many dusty miles
Later on near Denver, when our drive was nearly done
I still smile as I remember when he turned and called me “son.”                         

And now his parting words I cling to
They’re the hope inside my head
“You are not alone, He is there with you” was all that angel said.

They are with us on the mountain
They are with us in the sky
They were sent by the Father
